From Fountain City, Indiana, Paul Merkamp is a freshman in high school. A student of Renee Parcell, Merkamp performed "Romance for Horn" by Camille Saint-Saens on French Horn, accompanied by Carol Bailey. Merkamp will be the student soloist who will perform with the Richmond Symphony Orchestra on 8 December Pops Potpourri concert at 3:00 p.m.

2nd Place - Pauline & Adina Taylor (Right)

Students of Jessica Hung and Kathy Johnson, the two sisters and violinists Pauline and Adina Taylor from Dayton, Ohio, performed Pablo de Sarasate's "Navarra" accompanied by Leah Estes.

3rd Place - Brandon Lee Beam (Center)

A senior from Union City, OH, Brandon Lee Beam will be participating in the Orchestra Within an Orchestra program during the 8 December Pops Potpourri concert at 3:00 p.m. For the Young Artist Competition, Beam performed Johann Nepomuk Hummel's "Trumpet Concerto" accompanied by Rebecca Burnett. He is a student of Audrey Hathaway.

Middle and high school students from Wayne and surrounding counties compete for cash awards and the opportunity to perform as a soloist with the RSO during one of the subscription concerts. All competitors receive feedback from professional judges.

Celebrating its 57th anniversary in 2013-14, this program is a wonderful opportunity for growth in performance for participants. The competition is open to the community, so our guests may experience young, local talent. Artists will perform with the Richmond Symphony Orchestra on Sunday, 8 December at the Pops Potpourri concert at 3:00 p.m.

We look forward to sharing another proud moment with participants and their family and friends in December.
