Catacoustic Consort: In Song Lay My Desire

The Richmond Symphony Orchestra (RSO) welcomes Catacoustic Consort of Cincinnati, OH. Join the Catacoustic Consort for a romantic afternoon of beautiful music from the Italian Baroque period (during the birth of opera) for soprano, and period instruments: theorbo, harp, viol, and lirone. The group will perform a free concert. The concert is made possible by a grant through the Wayne County Foundation and generous community support.

The Catacoustic Consort presents a variety of vocal and instrumental music from Renaissance chamber music to Baroque opera, with the intent of recreating the sound of the music when it was originally performed. The music is performed on period instruments such as the viola da gamba, theorbo, organ, harpsichord, Baroque guitar, and lute. In addition to a historically informed approach to performing music, Catacoustic Consort is dedicated to approaching music with an understanding of the life and times of when it was originally played, including an informed humanities presentation to accompany its programs. Some of the composers of early music include J.S. Bach, William Byrd, Giulio Caccini, and Boismortier.

This concert is the debut performance of Catacoustic’s Baroque harp, which is an instrument strung with three parallel rows of strings. Two musicians are traveling from Milano, Italy for this performance of rare Italian baroque music by Sigismondo D’India, Giulio Caccini, and Barbara Strozzi. Musicians include Annalisa Pappano, Michael Leopold, Sherezade Panthaki, and Chiara Granata
