Giving to the RSO

A Cultural Asset

Did you know that Richmond is one of only a few cities of its size in our country to benefit from a professional symphony orchestra? Many might think that a symphony promotes community building by providing social occasions for its citizens. Others might add that a symphony builds on our collective history, bringing past musical traditions to life and showcasing modern musical trends. As a cultural asset, our symphony adds to the quality of life in Richmond and assists in attracting newcomers to our area. Assigning a monetary value to a symphony is difficult, but we can tell you first-hand, our symphony is an expensive business venture with an annual budget over $305,000.

The RSO depends totally on the generosity, good will and support of its community. No matter how successful the RSO might be in selling season tickets to its concerts, ticket sale revenue accounts for only one third of the cost of our performances. Without the far-reaching financial support of local businesses, non-profit organizations, granting agencies, individual board members and annual fund gifts from our season ticket holders, we could not operate. With arts-related support from federal and state sources diminishing, we must rely even more on our community.

Your greatest benefit lies in the knowledge that as a Circle member, you are a vital player in the Richmond Symphony Orchestra — our instrument to bring to Richmond and the surrounding area the lush gift of music, the universal language that needs no translation.
